Here's how Neighbours bosses are making plans to save the show with big changes

"There are definite ways that the show could return in the future."

Neighbours boss Jason Herbison has revealed plans to potentially save the show, as it approaches its upcoming finale.

Neighbours fans have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions over the last few years, when Australia's longest-running soap was axed in 2022.

It was brought back to life in 2023 by Amazon, which commissioned a two-year run on its free streaming platform Freevee, but failed to secure a renewal deal and was axed for a second time earlier this year.

However, it seems there is still a glimmer of hope for fans, as executive producer Herbison has shared the possibility of a future return to Erinsborough.

Speaking to TV Tonight, Herbison hinted that there are "definite ways" for Neighbours to return, as the upcoming finale will leave the show "open-ended".

It is very much open-ended as to how it might come back one day. There is absolutely that possibility, and that'll make more sense when we get there, as to why I've gone the way I've gone. But there are definite ways that the show could return in the future."

While Neighbours may not return as a soap opera, Herbison shared that the content could be moulded into various formats, including "origin stories", and pitched to potential new broadcasters.

It could be anything. It really could. Obviously, when we ended in 2022 and Amazon picked us up, we basically came back pretty much the same. Although the new model was airing four, we've still been making five episodes a week," he said.

"The narrative and the storyline, and I guess the overall tone and model of the show, was pretty much the same. All I'm really saying is, it doesn't have to be."

He continued: "Maybe it is less episodes, maybe it is a shorter run, maybe it is shorter seasons, maybe it is telemovies… origin stories. All of these things are things that we talk about, but obviously, right now we are focused on winding up this chapter in a fulfilling way."

Production is scheduled to wrap this Friday and the final episode will air on 11 December in Australia and the UK.
