"I think everyone needs a break."
Neighbours star Rebekah Elmaloglou has shared a disappointing update on the show's future. The beloved Aussie soap was cancelled for a second time last February, just under two years after making a comeback on Amazon.
Speaking to TV Tonight following her stint on the Australian version of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, Elmaloglou suggested we may never return to the residents of Erinsborough.
The Terese Willis actress said: "The fan groups are still going strong, and there’s still so much hope out there.
I think Jason [Herbison, executive producer] is probably going to leave it be for a while. I think he needs a break. I think everyone needs a break. I don’t know.
"I think it may be finished this time round. But the fan groups are still going.”
Just a month ago, Elmaloglou was more optimistic about Neighbours' future when she told TV Week: "I just get the feeling that Jason Herbison, our wonderful executive producer, won't just leave it at that.
"I'm sure he'll come up with some fabulous ideas for a spin-off or reunion special. It's just too much of an iconic show to let go."
Neighbours aired its final episode in December 2025, with the finale leaving open the possibility for a revival in a new location or a very different-looking Ramsey Street.
I always knew that if the show ended, I would have to go a very different way to 2022. There was just no way to compete with the last finale and I needed a fresh angle.
"So I put those two elements together and decided a threat to the Street was in order."
