The recent string of robberies has already caused plenty of concern in the bay, with the surf club targeted and Justin’s (James Stewart) van stolen as the thieves became increasingly bold.
David (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor) has been overseeing the investigation, but recently chose to hand the case to probationary constable Richie Brezniak (Rocco Forrester-Sach), seeing it as a learning opportunity for the new recruit.
Though enthusiastic, Richie has struggled to settle into life at the station since arriving in Summer Bay, with Cash (Nicholas Cartwright) already at his wits’ end.
David has been more willing to give Richie room to improve, but next week tests that patience again.
At the station, Cash and David are also taking the case seriously, aware that the thieves need to be caught before someone gets hurt.
Richie is keen to help move things along, but his eagerness soon causes another problem when he calls Justin in for another chat about the stolen van.
When Richie also asks about the van’s insurance, Justin realises that he’s being treated as a possible suspect!
Richie’s sent away for the rest of the day, but the setback only leaves him more determined to prove himself.
David then gathers the officers and shows them CCTV footage from a grocery store theft, hoping it will help them track down the people responsible.
He pulls Richie from the case, pointing out that he abandoned his partner, left the victim behind and ignored protocol.
Alana claims that she and her boyfriend bought the van from a man on the side of the road, and that her boyfriend is somewhere nearby.
The man continues to approach, and Richie ignores David’s command as the confrontation escalates.
Cash soon arrives and asks what happened, and Richie stumbles as he admits that he accidentally shot David.
There, his life is in the hands of new ED doctor Amelia Carlisle (Nicole da Silva), whose arrival in Summer Bay has already made an impression.
Alf was impressed by the newcomer’s medical knowledge and even offered her a job, only for Amelia to politely explain that her job kept her busy enough.
With Dana (Ally Harris) assisting, Amelia takes charge as David is rushed into resus by Paramedic Jo (Katie Horky).
The dramatic episode mark the debut of Nicole da Silva as the show’s latest regular cast member.
“Amelia comes from a challenging childhood and is used to moving around a lot,” Nicole told New Idea. “So when circumstances change and she decides to stay in the Bay, it poses a real challenge for her. I liked that, despite her past, she pursues her future wholeheartedly.”
Nicole appeared in one episode of the show back in 2005 as Jane Sims, a girl who Robbie (Jason Smith) and Kim (Chris Hemsworth) bumped into whilst on a boys’ day out to a secluded beach.
“To be back on this show that has stood the test of time and continues to rate really strongly–and is, in essence, one of the backbones of this industry–it’s great to be a part of it.”
Home and Away is available to stream from 6am weekdays, with double bill episodes airing from 6pm on 5Star.
